Program Description and PurposeSt. Luke's Hospital and Health Care Network is a network of four hospitals located mid-way between the New York and Philadelphia metropolitan areas. The network serves the Greater Lehigh Valley, which is growing at a very rapid rate. St. Luke's Hospital - Bethlehem Campus serves as the flagship institution for the network and is the site of the Level 1 Regional Resource Trauma Center. The Trauma/Surgical Critical Care Physician Assistant Residency plans on accepting its first two residents October 2007. This 12 month program will offer didactic and clinical training in trauma and surgical critical care. St. Luke's is very excited to offer this residency program for physician assistants. The program will meet standards set by the Association of Post Graduate Physician Assistant Programs. Curriculum OutlineSt. Luke's Hospital is dedicated to healthcare education. The program will accept two PA residents per year into the trauma/critical care residency program. PA residents will rotate through twelve one-month rotations. The residents will spend four months in the surgical critical care unit, six months on the trauma service and two months in an elective of their choice. Please see the attached documents: critical care objectives and trauma objectives for specifics. PA residents will participate in the critical care journal club and the surgical journal club. They will also have the opportunity to attend the critical care lecture series, trauma core lecture series, surgical grand rounds, Advanced Trauma Life Support Course and the TRIMM lecture series. These lectures and courses, complimented with clinical experience will prepare the student for the written exams. University and Institutional Affiliations
Admissions Criteria:Applicants will submit the following in order to be considered for acceptance. The program has an application deadline of April 30. Late entries will be considered on an individual basis.
Interviews will begin in May and notification of admission will be in June. Personal interviews are preferred, but phone interviews will be considered. The fellowship will begin October 1. Surgical Residency Program Program Specialties: General Surgery and Surgical Subspecialities
Program DescriptionGeisinger Medical Center in conjunction with the Division of Surgery will offer a 12 month postgraduate physician assistant residency program in General Surgery and selected subspecialties. CurriculumThe 12-month residency program at Geisinger Medical Center combines a continuous didactic curriculum throughout all clinical rotations. The continued didactic curriculum will consist of scheduled lectures in relation to assigned readings. In addition to the lectures, weekly conferences will be held and PA residents are expected to attend and participate. The weekly conferences include; Surgical Grand Rounds, Morbidity and Mortality, and Surgical Oncology Tumor Conference. Daily morning conferences of Orthopedic Medical Educational will also be attended while on the Orthopedic Rotation. Cardiothoracic Monthly Clinical Forum and the Cardiothoracic bi-monthly Morbidity and Mortality Conferences will be attended while on the CTVS rotation. PA residents will also complete training for certification of Advanced Trauma Life Support; ATLS, and Pediatric Advance Life Support; PALS. The twelve-month clinical rotations will be divided as follows: Four months in General Surgery with focus on Trauma, MIS, and Surgical Oncology. One of these 4 months will be spent in Community Practice Service Line. Three months will be spent in Orthopedic surgery. Three months will be spent in Cardiothoracic Surgery. The final two months of the program will be spent in elective surgical subspecialty fields. Opportunities for elective rotations are: Plastic Surgery, Transplant Surgery, Pediatric Surgery, Vascular Surgery, Colorectal, or repeating any of the above required rotations. The workload and duties that the PA resident is responsible for are similar to those of a first or second year physician resident, PGY 1 or PGY2. The workload and duties will include; history and physical exam taking and documenting, completing progress notes, evaluating patients, performing daily rounds on inpatients, ordering diagnostic tests and/or laboratory studies, assisting in the operating room, performing minor procedures. The PA residents will also participate in nighttime call with the physician resident staff and the PA staff. A Clinical Skills Lab will be offered and required for furthering hands on clinical skills. Virtual laparoscopy, suturing practice, pelvic and breast models are just a few things offered by the skills lab.
