PROGRAM DESCRIPTION AND HISTORY:
The Northeast Missouri Regional Medical Center/Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine (NRMC/KCOM) Physician Assistant Dermatology Residency is an intensive twelve-month program of clinical and didactic instruction. It is modeled after the American Osteopathic College of Dermatology's first year Dermatology Residency at NRMC/KCOM. Graduates will be well equipped with the knowledge and surgical skills necessary to care for the dermatologic patient.
CURRICULUM:
- Weekly Journal Club with attending and dermatology residents. Journals reviewed include, "Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology", "Archives of Dermatology", "Journal of Dermatology Surgery", "Cutis", and others.
- Weekly book review encompassing such texts as Fitzpatrick, Andrews, Arndt, Dahl, Lever and others.
- Weekly slide review with Department of Pathology reviewing previous weeks biopsies.
- Weekly OKUN Kodachrome slide review of clinical dermatology and dermatopathology.
- Weekly anatomy review prior to Mohs micrographic surgery cases.
- Monthly dermatology grand rounds at regional academic institutions.
- Opportunity to attend annual and semiannual American Academy of Dermatology, American Osteopathic College of Dermatology, American Academy of Physician Assistants meetings.
Clinical training includes direct patient care under close supervision of attending physician and senior residents of the Department of Dermatology. The physician assistant dermatology resident will have a wide variety of exposure including: general dermatology, dermatopathology, hospital consultations, MOHS surgery, phototherapy, laser surgery, radiation therapy, chemical peels, dermabrasion, sclerotherapy, hair transplantation, collagen injection, liposuction, flaps and grafts.
UNIVERSITY AND INSTITUTIONAL AFFILIATIONS:
Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine, the founding school osteopathic medicine, was founded by Andrew Taylor Still, M.D. in 1892. KCOM has been responsible for training many skilled physicians since its inception.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:
- Must have graduated from a CAAHEP approved Primary Care Physician Assistant Program.
- Must be NCCPA eligible or certified. New graduates who are accepted into the program will be required to take and pass the NCCPA certification examination in October.
- Must be certified in ACLS.
- Must have a Missouri physician assistant license.
- Must complete a written application.
- College transcripts from both undergraduate and physician assistant studies.
- Three letters of recommendation including one from the Physician Assistant Program Director or faculty if less than two years since graduation.
- A personal interview will be required by the applicant at the applicant's expense.
SELECTION FACTORS:
The Dermatology Residency Program for Physician Assistants accepts one resident yearly.
Selection factors are based on personal interviews, three letters of recommendation, transcripts, work and life experience, past education and motivation to learn dermatology.
CREDENTIALS AWARDED:
Certificate of completion of one year post-graduate training program in dermatology. Candidate may be eligible for a Master's Degree.
FINANCES/BENEFITS:
- Salary negotiated between resident and program director/sponsoring institution.
- Seven days of vacation, seven days sick leave, time for CME per program director.
- One thousand dollars CME, book allowance.
- Paid health/disability/malpractice insurance.
- Two lab coats provided.
- Meals provided for residents while on duty.
- PA residents are responsible for their own housing. Assistance in locating single or family dwellings is available.
- Deferment of student loans while enrolled.
- Moonlighting allowed if it does not interfere with duties required in residency. Written approval is required from the program director.
