PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:

The Physician Assistant Orthopedic Residency at UF, Jacksonville is a twelve-month postgraduate residency located in northeast Floridašs only level I trauma center. The goal of the program is to train new and practicing physician assistants to become proficient orthopedic clinicians and surgical first assists. During the twelve months of training, students will rotate through general orthopaedics, sports medicine, trauma, spine, hand, adult reconstruction, and foot and ankle disciplines, as well as one to two elective rotations. Students will also have the opportunity to participate in research projects conducted within the orthopaedic department.

The University of Florida, Jacksonville already has an orthopedic physician residency that has succeeded in delivering excellent training and mentoring to our surgical residents. The physician assistant residents will work with staff PAšs, attending physicians, and physician residents. They will participate in morning report, call, hospital rounds, grand rounds, didactic learning, ongoing research projects, as well as clinical and surgical patient care.

CURRICULUM:

The program is divided into didactic (20%), surgical (20%) and clinical/ hospital (60%) settings. The resident will have reading assignments, regular presentation of patients at morning rounds, and testing at the end of each rotation. Each resident will participate in inpatient care, clinical evaluation and treatment, surgery, and assist with trauma call one night per week.

AFFILIATION:

The UF, Jacksonville Physician Assistant Orthopedic Residency resides at the Bone and Joint Center located within the University of Florida Jacksonville Healthcare Inc. and Shands Jacksonville.

APPLICATION DEADLINE:

March 1, 2006

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS:

  • The applicant must be a graduate of a CAAHEP approved primary care physician assistant program.

  • The applicant must be eligible to sit for the NCCPA exam and pass before March 1, 2006, OR be and registered to sit for the NCCPA exam. All students MUST HAVE a temporary license to practice in Florida, OR already be licensed to practice in the State of Florida prior to the start of the course. SELECTION CRITERIA

Residents will be selected based on the following:
  • Academic records from their PA program.
  • Two letters of recommendation; either from PA program instructors/preceptors or from physician employers/attendings. At least one physician reference required if instructor references used.
  • A personal interview.

CREDENTIALS AWARDED:

Upon completion of the residency program, the University of Florida, Jacksonville will award a certificate of training.

TUITION:

None.

STIPEND:

$40,000

BENEFITS:

Health insurance, malpractice insurance. One week of PTO.

HOUSING:

Arranged individually be each resident.

EXPENSES:

Residents will be required to purchase their own textbooks and personal physical exam equipment (stethoscope, pen light, reflex hammer).
