PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:

Arrowhead Regional Medical Center (previously the San Bernardino County Medical Center) opened the doors of its new state of the art facility in 1999. This level II trauma and teaching hospital is located at the foot of the San Bernardino Mountains with beaches and winter activities located within one hours drive. ARMC has 370 beds and receives trauma and surgery patients from throughout the largest single county in the United States. The nationally acclaimed Inland Counties Regional Burn Center is the only major burn center serving the four counties of Inyo, Mono, Riverside and San Bernardino.

This is a full time position that will require an average of sixty to eighty hours per week. Benefits include a stipend, malpractice insurance, dental/medical insurance, and three weeks vacation time. Textbooks, medical equipment and housing are the resident’s responsibility.

Classes start November 15 each year. Deadline for receipt of completed applications is July 15, with personal interviews immediately following. Interviews are at the applicant’s expense and are required for a residency position. Decisions will be made by mid-September.

CURRICULUM:

This is a twelve month intensive didactic and clinical training program with scheduled rotations through the burn unit, the surgical intensive care unit, operating room, general surgery clinics, trauma, general surgery and neurosurgery. A four week elective through one of these is provided at the end of the rotation schedule.

PROGRAM COMPONENTS:

Trauma conference is held weekly with selected cases presented and reviewed by faculty
and residents.

A number of surgical specialty lectures including Plastics, Neurosurgery and
otolaryngology will be included in the General Surgery lecture series.

Surgical Grand Rounds are held regularly to cover specific surgical topics with
presentations by clinical faculty and outside speakers.

Morbidity and mortality review are conducted weekly with faculty and residents.

Surgery ICU conference is held weekly with the surgery physician assistant presenting
topics as assigned.

Surgery physician assistant residents will first assist in general surgery cases as
coordinated with the general surgery resident and attending physicians.

CREDENTIALS AWARDED:

Upon graduation, the surgery physician assistant resident receives a certificate from Arrowhead Regional Medical Center. Students who enroll in the Master of Science in Health Sciences-Health Professions Education concentration at Western University of Health Sciences, and complete all degree requirements, will receive a Master of Science degree. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:

Graduate of a Primary Care Physician Assistant Program which is approved by the
Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA). If still a student, your program director must verify your status as a student in good standing and your anticipated graduation date

Certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants or anticipated date of exam.

License to practice as a Physician Assistant in the State of California.

One year of clinical experience as a PA is desirable.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:

This is a 12-month full-time postgraduate residency program offering intensive training in inpatient and outpatient obstetrics and gynecology. The program is housed at Arrowhead Regional Medical Center and Riverside County Regional Medical Center which are two of Southern California's premier teaching hospitals each with over 350 beds, approximately 3,600 obstetrical deliveries per year, and more than 30,000 visit encounters to the hospital's outpatient women's health center annually. The PA residents are trained along with the OB/GYN physician residents, working 70-80 hours per week, and are exposed to the management of complicated and non-complicated antepartum, intrapartum, postpartum, postoperative, acutely ill, and well OB and GYN patients. Upon completion of this residency, the PA should be competent in performing vaginal deliveries, 1st assisting in Cesarean deliveries and gynecological surgeries, and performing colposcopies and other common gynecological procedures.

CURRICULUM:

The didactic portion consists of daily morning rounds, biweekly lectures by attending physicians, monthly journal clubs, morbidity and mortality conferences, assigned readings, and self-directed learning. The clinical portion consists of training and experience in labor and delivery, obstetrical ultrasound, L&D triage, ER consults, OR assisting, and the management of high and low risk obstetrical and gynecological patients.

COSTS/BENEFITS:

There is no fee or tuition for the program. Benefits include a stipend, malpractice insurance, medical insurance, 15 days vacation, and 50 hours of Category I CME. Housing and the initial on-site interview expense are the responsibility of the resident.

CREDENTIALS AWARDED:

Upon graduation from the residency, the physician assistant receives a Certificate of Completion of a Postgraduate OB/GYN Residency from Riverside County Regional Medical Center.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION AND HISTORY:

The Orthopaedic Surgery Physician Assistant Residency Program at Arrowhead Regional Medical Center is a twelve month intensive didactic and clinical training program designed to prepare the primary care physician assistant for a career in Orthopaedic Surgery. Our program offers two overlapping classes of 2 residents in each class to utilize senior residents to augment the training of junior residents. The PA resident is trained along with the MD residents from Loma Linda University and the DO residents from Western University of Health Science. This new facility, opened in March 1999, is a 373 bed level II trauma center and has a large Family Practice training program in house, as well as surgical subspecialties. We are located close to the foothills of the San Bernardino mountains, driving distance to beaches, deserts as well as mountains for recreational activities.

CURRICULUM:

Our program consists of a formal didactic section of lectures given by attending physician staff, Physician assistant staff, and ancillary department staff members. The resident will have weekly reading assignments, written and oral quizzes and exams, and Grand round presentations to prepare. In addition, the resident will participate in providing care to in-patients, out-patient clinic responsibilities, they will handle emergency room orthopaedic consults, and assist in the operating room.

UNIVERSITY/INSTITUTION AFFILIATIONS:

This residency program is affiliated with Western University of Health Sciences in Pomona, California, as well as California State University, Dominguez Hills. Master degree options are available from both institutions for qualified applicants upon completion of all additional required course work. We are also associated with Loma Linda University School of Medicine and provide clinical and surgical training to medical students and orthopaedic surgery residents.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS:

  • The applicant must be a graduate of a CAAHEP approved primary care physician assistant program.
  • Applicant must have passed the NCCPA exam and have current certification, or have a valid interim license to practice in California.
  • Prior clinical experience is desired, however, not required.
  • A strong desire to work in Orthopaedic Surgery, with an interest in musculoskeletal disorders.
  • Bachelor Degree required for all Master's Degree applications.

CREDENTIALS AWARDED:

Upon graduation, the Orthopeadic Surgery Physician Assistant Resident will receive a certificate. An M.A. in Education from Western University, or an M.S. in Health Science, PA.

FINANCIAL INFORMATION:

  • There is no fee or tuition for the program. All master degree candidates will be required to pay the appropriate fees to the school attended.
  • A stipend will be provided.
  • A benefit package including health insurance, professional insurance coverage, and bonuses.
  • Housing is not provided.
